Fall in New York is very nice.
Something I Drank
Pickleback, Minnows
To me, shots are a means of celebration. (In moderation, of course.) If you’ve ever seen me on Wharf Street in Portland, Maine on a Saturday night, I’ve probably ordered you a lemon drop shot. And after a big dinner there’s nothing better than a teeny tiny glass of bitter amaro.
Last week at Minnows, I had an old reliable–the pickleback shot. The pickleback is a shot of well (not good) whiskey accompanied with a shot of pickle juice. The brine masks the horrible aftertaste of cheap whiskey and makes for a boost of much needed electrolytes in one’s system when drinking.
Though if you read this newsletter, I assume you’ve had your fair share of picklebacks too.
The pickleback at Minnows in Greenpoint comes with pickle brine from Chrissy’s Cukes. It is so sour and so salty you instantly forget about any sort of burn from said shot of whiskey. I like one to celebrate seeing some friends or a way to get people talking. Try it sometime!
Something I Bought
Various Vintage, Nostalgia Maine
One of my favorite instagram accounts for the past few years has been @nostalgiamaine. It is an incredible archive of people, places, and things I saw in my childhood growing up. They feature Portland, Maine and the surrounding area–like the mall when it was popping, Old Orchard Beach and even my hometown of Falmouth. They do a fantastic job of curating and showcasing the nostalgia of my childhood. They also curate a really great vintage selection and do sales on their stories often. The pieces are always fun, well priced, and super niche. Go show them some love and hopefully we can get them to do it full time!
Something I Ate
Sweet Potato Thyme Breakfast Sausage, Seemore
The sweeties at Seemore make some incredibly delicious sausages and the breakfast sausage is no exception. I’m not gonna lie, when they announced that they were launching breakfast sausages I was most excited for the cheesy hash ones. They are great! But there is something about the sweet potato ones that really take it to the next level. They are chicken sausages that include sweet potato, brown sugar, and thyme inside the links. The brown sugar and sweet potato additions give it a sweet and savory flavor. They are pure bliss. The links are great to air fry and throw into breakfast wraps. These sausages with some cheesy scrambled eggs and hash-brown in a Trader Joe's flour tortilla with some hot sauce? That is a dream.
