Hey pals!
Been a minute. A lot has gone down since I wrote my last newsletter but I’ll give you the highlights.
I had some great times
I moved to New York
I got a cool job and then got laid off
Most of you probably knew all this but for the people who follow this and not my IG, sorry for the lack of closure. We’re back in action.
Expect this in your inbox on Tuesdays. On occasion I will have a longer piece on Thursdays that touches on one subject instead of the 4 things I normally would talk about. If you have anything you’d like to hear about, send me an email and I’ll try my best.
Without further ado, here we go!
Something I Drank
Lager Town, Half Acre
Fall started in NYC about a week ago and I needed a beverage to get me into the spirit of the season. I have been drinking less beer (more on that soon) but around this time of year I really crave something malty and clean. Lager Town is perfect for that.
This style of beer is an Oktoberfest (or Marzen if you are a nerd). Most people think you drink this beer at the Oktoberfest celebrations (you don’t, you drink festbier) but it is a beer brewed to keep one warm during the changing seasons. It essentially is a lager with some darker more roasted malts that give a beer a more toasty/bready quality. This one has really nice pumpernickel and spicy qualities which make me feel like I am really getting into the season.
This beer is best drunk outside, as there is something magical about a maltier beer in the fall weather. Pair it with some pals, sports, and hay bales and you’ve got some magic. Find it where good beer is sold around you! I snagged mine at Beer Karma.
Something I Bought
Famous chef/friend-of-Benny Blanco/billionaire Matty Matheson started a workwear line. Although I find his shtick pretty corny, the dude does know how to dress; which, given his size, is incredibly difficult. The whole thing is billed as “workwear for the people'', which is kinda weird given that the pairs of pants I got were upwards of $160 bucks. (Yes, I get that clothes are expensive to make but maybe change the slogan.)
Still, I was eager to try and support a brand made for people my size. The sizing is incredibly unconventional from what I have experienced, so be ready with a tape measure if you decide to order anything. The quality is great and the material built to last. If you have money to burn I’d suggest getting a pair of pants and seeing how ya like em. Just make sure you get the right size :)
Something I Ate
Instead of giving you some obvious NYC food that you have seen on Instagram one trillion times, I am going to try to speak to more hidden gems here. Third Floor is a small little Japanese coffee and provisions shop in Williamsburg. I live right near here (please don’t come and murder me) and find myself here often to grab a snack.
For me, a “snack” is a hard thing to do, but Third Floor’s Onigiri (or rice balls) hit every time. Onigiri is a Japanese snack made from rice formed wrapped in nori. There are a ton of different fillings like tuna, pickled plum, and other goodies.
Incredibly affordable and delicious I love nothing more than heading over and picking a mushroom one up around three or four when our dinner reservation is at seven. The woman who runs the shop is incredibly sweet and you can always be in and out in 5 minutes. Should you not be into the rice balls they have a ton of fun imported snacks and goodies that are also perfect to squash any mid afternoon hunger. Go see them here.
something that made me laugh
