most double ipas are bad! they suffer from one of two problems. either they are so loaded with hops the beer literally hurts to drink, or they were so focused on making it “thicc” that it is sweeter than simple syrup. normally if i wanted to get drunk on something that tasted like oj i would just have a screwdriver. there are some special ones, that even me, a double ipa skeptic, will admit are incredibly tasty beverages. belleflower, the newest brewery in portland, makes a tasty one.

barn hex is incredibly drinkable for a style categorized by its undrinkable nature. it is “juicy” (sweet and fruit forward) without feeling like your teeth are going to fall out. the alcohol is there, but it does not give you a fat tongue after working through half the can. these guys are new and this ipa is a great start towards making this style a whole lot better in our beer-centric city. check them out here.
